Release Date: October 20th, 2006 by Walt Disney Pictures. The Voices: Chris Sarandon, Catherine O'Hara, Danny Elfman, William Hickey, Glenn Shadix, Paul Reubens, Ken Page and Edward Ivory. Directed by Henry Selick. BASIC PREMISE: Jack Skellington (voice of Chris Sarandon), the king of Halloweentown, stumbles upon Christmastown and tries to bring Christmas to Halloweentown. ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: In Disney Digital 3-D, The Nightmare Before Christmas consistently dazzles. Those who fell in love with the two-dimensional version’s visuals will feel even more amazed with this 3-D version. Jack Skellington kidnaps Santa Claus in hopes of becoming the new leader of Christmastown. The Oogie Boogie man (voice of Ken Page) tries to eat Santa Claus, though. It’s somewhat funny when Jack tries to bring Christmas to Halloweentown, but the Halloweentown locals don’t understand the concept of a Christmas tree or care for the melody of “Jingle Bells”. Although the plot feels rather thin, what makes this a truly engaging and classic film is Tim Burton’s story which magically combines unforgettable musical numbers, imaginatively characters, dark humor and eye-popping stop-motion animation. At the same time, Burton also manages to add some charm with a brief romance between Jack and Sally (voice of Catherine O’Hara) Watching this film on the big screen rather than the small screen allows for more attention to detail and overall richer visual experience that’s even further enhanced with 3D glasses. SPIRITUAL VALUE: Ultimately, this film will warm your heart for the holidays with its oddly enchanting spirit. INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: None, as long as you suspend your disbelief.
