In the Pit (Unrated)

Release Date: February 2nd, 2007 (Cinema Village) by Kino International.
Directed by Juan Carlo Rulfo.
In Spanish with subtitles.

BASIC PREMISE: A documentary about the experiences of construction men who construct an elevated freeway in Mexico City.

ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: Through sights, sounds and brief interviews, In the Pit captures the daily—and nightly—experiences of a group of construction workers who build a second ramp to the Periferico freeway in Mexico City. Observing these men at work seems a bit boring at first, but you gradually become absorbed as the camera focuses on their environment and allows you feel like you’re there along with them. Director Juan Carlo Rulfo wisely includes a few interviews which allow the works to project their own unique personality to the camera and to discuss their thoughts and dreams. Each day they must wake up early to start work until late in the day which certainly takes a lot of strength and commitment both mentally and physically. They eventually get used to their job and to one another whether they’re in a pit or on the ground or high above the ground. The final 6-minute shot gives a bird’s-eye view of the entire length of the elevated ramp which feels equally overwhelming and break-taking just to look at their nearly-completed massive project. It’s quite refreshing to watch such a rare documentary about construction workers who sweat day by day and even risk their lives to build structures that people too often take for granted.

SPIRITUAL VALUE: These construction workers may not always be so interesting or even noticeable to pedestrians or those who drive by, but in now way does that make them less important. A job is only as important as you make it to be. Each individual has some sort of a purpose in life as well as dreams, some of which or all of which may not be discovered or fulfilled yet. Everyone has the right to express themselves and, especially, to be heard by others regardless of whether they’re a construction worker, politician, mailman, teacher, doctor, secretary or a clerk.

INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: None.
