Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (PG)

Release Date: June 15th, 2007 by 20th Century Fox.
The Cast: Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Michael Chiklis, Julian McMahon, Kerry Washington, Andre Braugher, Laurence Fishburne, Doug Jones.
Directed by Tim Story.

BASIC PREMISE: The Fantastic Four return to stop the Silver Surfer (voice of Laurence Fishburne) from destroying the planet with his powers.

ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: Fans of the first Fantastic Four movie will be exhilarated by this mindless entertainment. The action begins when the Silver Surfer zooms from the sky during the wedding ceremony of Reed (Gruffudd) and Sue (Alba). Reed learns that the cosmic cloud, Galactus, will imminently destruct the planet. It turns out that the Silver Surfer’s surfboard contains the energy required for the destruction, so he gathers together rest of the Fantastic Four for another exciting mission. Co-screenwriters Don Payne and Mark Frost include some well-needed comic relief, such as when Ben Grimm, a.k.a The Thing (Chiklis), and Johnny Storm (Evans) switch powers or another scene when The Thing and his girlfriend, Alice Masters (Washington) flirt with each other. It’s also worth mentioning that the Laurence Fishbure’s deep voice works quite well as the Silver Surfer. Granted, the plot involving the destruction of the planet feels very clichéd and derivative, but at least the Fantastic Four have a lot of fun and even experience some surprises during their adventure. Director Tim Story moves the film at an appropriately quick pace without a dull moment. The special effects occasionally look cheesy, though, given the obvious use of blue screens, but whenever the Silver Surfer pops up, which is often, it looks very dazzling. At a running time of a brisk 92 minutes, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer never overstays its welcome.

SPIRITUAL VALUE: None is required or desired.

INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: None, as long as you suspend your disbelief.
