Death of a Dynasty (R)

Release Date: April 29th, by TLA Releasing
The Cast: Ebon Moss-Bachrach,Capone,Robert Stapleton,Devon Aoki.
Basic Premise: A mockumentary about a white journalist (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) enters the world of Damon Dash's Roc-A-Fella Records in order to find some dirt to write a juicy and eyebrow-raising article for a hip-hop magazine.

ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: The mockumentary style works very well, with great impersonations of Damon Dash as well as Jay-Z. As the journalist gets further and further into the hip-hop world, the plot gets more interesting and engaging. The soundtrack is very appropriate and effective. But the most enjoyable parts are when the actors who play themselves show up, such as Chloe Sevigny and even Carson Daly. It blurs the line between what is real and what is fake about this mockumentary. Often, this blurriness is surprisingly humorous.

SPIRITUAL VALUE: The inside world of hip hop is rather predictable, with all its greed and power. It looks all nice from the outside, but on the inside it is very complicated and deceptive. The media ends up being the most manipulative, which is not surprising even in our society.

NSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: Occasionally predictable.

NUMBER OF TIMES I CHECKED MY WATCH: 2

THE BOTTOM LINE: An interesting, provocative and entertaining mockumentary with a fun and humorous blur of what is real and what is not. A great cast and wonderful soundtrack adds to the entertainment.

RECOMMENDED WAY TO WATCH: True fans of Hip-Hop: Movie Theater (1st Run)                                                       Everyone else:   Movie Theater (2nd Run)
