Blades of Glory (PG-13)

Release Date: March 30th, 2007 by Paramount Pictures.
The Cast: Will Ferrell, Jon Heder, Will Arnett, Amy Poehler, Jenna Fischer, William Fichtner, Craig T. Nelson, Romany Malco, Nick Swardson, Scott Hamilton, Rob Corddry.
Directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck.

BASIC PREMISE: After getting banned from a singles ice skating competition, Chazz Michael Michaels (Ferrell) and Jimmy MacElroy (Heder) team up together in the doubles ice skating competition.

ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: Blades of Glory succeeds in being thoroughly entertaining thanks to the chemistry between Will Ferrell and Jon Heder. As Chazz, Ferrell essentially plays the same kind of whacky character as he played in Old School, ElfAnchorman and Talladega Nights while Heder is a bit more subdued as Jimmy. Chazz and Jimmy are initially rivals in the singles ice skating competition, but, when they fight on the rink and get banned, that’s when the laughs start to roll in. Years later, they discover a loophole in the ice skating competition rules which allows them to compete together as a duo in the doubles competition even though they’re both males. Their only rival is a brother-sister team (Arnett and Poehler) who do everything they can to stop them from showing up at the competition. What follows is plenty of slapstick humor and some toilet humor (of course), but it’s all done in very upbeat comedic way which occasionally feels cartoonish and goofy. Fortunately, co-directors Josh Gordon and Will Speck never allow the plot to take itself too seriously and even include some jaw-dropping ice skating moves. From start to finish, it’s clear that all the actors are having a lot of fun in their roles and, therefore, you will have a lot of fun watching them. Be sure to pay attention to a few hilarious cameos.

SPIRITUAL VALUE: None is required or desired.

INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: None, as long as you check your brain at the door.

NUMBER OF TIMES I CHECKED MY WATCH: 0

IN A NUTSHELL: Outrageously funny. Will Ferrell and Jon Heder make a wonderful comic team.
