Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker (PG)

Release Date: October 13th, 2006 (AMC Empire 25) by The Weinstein Company.
The Cast: Alex Pettyfer, Ewan McGregor, Mickey Rourke, Bill Nighy, Sophie Okonedo, Alicia Silverstone, Missi Pyle, Sarah Bolger, Ashley Walters, Damian Lewis, Robbie Coltrane, Stephen Fry, Andy Serkis, Jimmy Carr.
Directed by Geoffrey Sax.

BASIC PREMISE: Alex Rider (Pettyfer), a teenager, goes on Operation: Stormbreaker for M16, a British secret intelligence service run by Alan Blunt (Nighy).

ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: Alex Pettyfer gives a bland performance as Alex Rider, a teenager whose uncle (McGregor) dies and, soon enough, learns that he must replace him as a spy for M16. Mickey Rourke plays the bad guy who schemes to take over the world through releasing new computers with a virus. His scheme sounds too inane and unimaginative. What follows is a silly adventure with no thrills and often aims for humor but falls flat on its face. Even Bill Nighy as the M16 boss, Alan Blunt, can’t provide any laughs. As Mrs. Jones, Alan’s sidekick, Sophie Okonedo tries unsuccessfully to channel Parker Posey’s performance as Lex Luther’s sidekick in Superman Returns. Then there’s Alicia Silverstone in an embarrassing role as Alex’s housekeeper who happens to know karate. This movie seems a very juvenile version of Austin Powers and a duller version of Agent Cody Banks, which seems like a classic by comparison.

SPIRITUAL VALUE: None is required or desired.

INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: None, as long as you suspend your disbelief.

NUMBER OF TIMES I CHECKED MY WATCH: 8

IN A NUTSHELL: Bland, unfunny and miscast. A silly adventure with no thrills.
