Release Date: March 9th, 2007 by Warner Bros. Pictures. The Cast: Gerard Butler, Lena Headey, Dominic West, David Wenham, Vincent Regan, Michael Fassbender, Tom Wisdom, Andrew Pleavin, Andrew Tiernan, Rodrigo Santoro. Directed by Zack Snyder. BASIC PREMISE: In 480 B.C., King Leonidas (Butler) leads his Spartan army of 300 against the Persian army led by King Xerxes (Santoro). Based on the graphic novel by Frank Miller. ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: 300 has plenty of intense action scenes loaded with amazing CGI special effects in every single frame. The plot takes off rather quickly as King Leonidas parts from his wife, Queen Gorgo (Headey) and leaves Sparta without permission from the council while gathering an army of 300 warriors to defeat the Persians. Much of the film feels like a darker, bloodier version of Lord of the Rings with much more emphasis on action rather than developing its characters. One of the potential warriors with a hunchback even vaguely resembles Gollum and there’s a song on the soundtrack that sounds a bit like the Lord of the Rings song by Enya. Fortunately, Gerard Butler, sporting a beard and lots of muscles, acts believably enough as the leader of the Spartan army. Director Zack Snyder simply knows how to entertain with a rather uncomplicated plot which would otherwise seem dull. From start finish, he fills each scene with truly beautiful cinematography, set design and costume design which makes you feel like you’re watching a work of art. The action scenes do have some gore, but the blood that spurts in slow-motion is very stylized. Even the lighting design is exceptional. Those looking for drama, romance or a better understanding of Ancient Greek history will be disappointed, but anyone who could use such a relentlessly glorious action film with awe-inspiring visuals will be immensely entertained, especially while watching it on an IMAX screen. SPIRITUAL VALUE: None is required or desired. INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: None, as long as you suspend your disbelief. NUMBER OF TIMES I CHECKED MY WATCH: 0 IN A NUTSHELL: An intense, awe-inspiring and glorious action film.
